As summer temperatures climb throughout the Antelope Valley, Energy for Palmdale’s Independent Choice (EPIC) is offering practical guidance to help Palmdale residents stay cool, manage energy use and reduce their electricity bills during the hottest months of the year.

One of the most impactful things residents can do is be mindful of when and how they use energy throughout the day. For example, planning to do your laundry and cooking during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, can make a meaningful difference. On especially hot days, avoiding the oven and opting to cook on the stovetop or on an outdoor grill helps keep indoor temperatures manageable. Opening windows during the morning, and at night, also allows cooler air to flow through the home, while covering windows during the day helps block out the intense summer sun.

Electricity rates are highest during peak hours, from 4 to 9 p.m., when demand on the grid is at its highest. Shifting energy-intensive activities like running the washer, dryer and dishwasher to off-peak hours can help save more than 50% per kilowatt hour used. When running the dryer, drying multiple loads back-to-back, cleaning the lint trap before each cycle and washing full loads in cold water all contribute to meaningful energy savings. Heating water accounts for almost 90% of the energy used by washing machines, and making the switch to cold water is one of the simplest upgrades a household can make.

Smart thermostat habits can also go a long way during summer. EPIC recommends setting the home’s thermostat between 75–78°F when at home, and raising it to around 85°F when away for more than a few hours. Pairing air conditioning with a ceiling fan can allow residents to raise the thermostat setting by about 4°F with no noticeable loss of comfort. Residents should also check air filters regularly, as a dirty filter forces the system to work harder and increases energy costs.

Beyond cooling, small everyday habits add up over time. Unplugging electronics and appliances when not in use and turning off lights when leaving a room can all help reduce unnecessary energy and water use and keep your bills low.For residents looking to take a more comprehensive approach to managing energy costs, EPIC’s Power Choice program offers solar generation and battery storage solutions with no down payment, no credit check and no property liens required.
