Solar panels generate electricity by converting sunlight directly into power through photovoltaic cells. During peak daylight hours, these systems often produce more electricity than a home can use. That surplus energy can then be stored in a home battery system, turning your setup into a full-scale energy management solution. Batteries store excess solar energy for use during high-demand evening hours or during power outages, providing emergency backup power and greater energy independence. This combination offers households increased reliability, long-term savings and resilience.
The benefits of solar and battery storage extend beyond the homes. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a typical residential solar installation cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions like CO₂ and other harmful pollutants. Plus, a 2019 Zillow study found that homes with solar panels sell for an average of 4.1% more than similar homes without them. These systems also relieve stress on the regional grid during peak periods, supporting a cleaner, more resilient Palmdale, aligned with EPIC’s mission to keep energy local and sustainable.
Recognizing cost as a major barrier, EPIC offers Power Choice, a zero-upfront cost program for solar panels and batteries. No credit check, no property lien, just pay for the clean energy you use through your regular electric bill, with a fixed 1.9% annual rate increase. Income-qualified residents in the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) and Family Electric Rate Assistance (FERA) can also enroll in Power Choice CARE, which can reduce electricity bills by an estimated 55-65% while gaining full solar and battery benefits. The program is limited to 6,000 statewide participants, so early enrollment is encouraged.
